I changed my primary clinic. Insurance says I didn’t.

I am in the US and have very good insurance by most standards. My husband works for our state and is part of a union. I usually cannot complain.

Back in September I began going to a new clinic because we had moved too far from our previous clinic earlier in 2021. I called and made the change to the number on the back of my insurance card. I have noticed the amounts I am responsible for to my clinic seem high, so I called again yesterday to inquire why. They said my primary clinic is still my previous clinic, and they have no notes or record of a phone call happening in September. As such, they will not back date any of my claims, they wouldn’t even allow me to speak to anyone else. I didn’t argue much as the person I spoke with was very helpful and I knew she couldn’t do more for me, but she did advise that I could submit an appeal and told me where to find it on the website.

As a side note, she did update my clinic for sure yesterday, but she couldn’t even find it in their system. She needed to get help. I wondered if this was part of the problem in September?

My question here is does anyone have any advice for me on going about this? I refuse to pay thousands of extra dollars when I know I called and made the change and have been going to the same clinic ever since. I know if I just file an appeal they will deny it. I want to know what else I need to do, who to contact, etc. Thank you for any advice!
