I choose to pay OOP for medical expenses, do I need insurance coverage.

A rhetorical question….but: most of the doctos and specialists that I see (on a very infrequent basis) either do not accept insurance or offer a lower rate for cash. I tend to pay for most visits Out of Pocket. We have never really found an insurance plan that is universally accepted by all of our preferred medical providers. It seems that I pay $1000/month premium for a health care plan for our family just in case there is a “catastrophic” emergency. Is that sort of the reality of having healthcare in America? We all spend thousands of dollars a year for just to protect ourselves from the bankruptcy-inducing price-gouging that will occur if get into a serious car accident that results in ambulance services, hospital admittance, tests/scans/imaging, physical therapy, etc…..

We have considered switching to a high-deductible HSA-compatible plan for the tax advantaged savings vehicle that an HSA provides since these HSA-compatible plans tend to be HMOs with restricted provider acceptance and no out-of-network coverage, so it kind of makes sense as a “catastrophic-only” insurance. We won’t rely upon it for general physician or specialist visits but in the event of a “catastrophic” event, we will only have the max OOP expenses to cover (assuming we end up in an in-network hospital).

Are there HSA-compatible PPO’s on the market, rather than HMO’s????
