I recently received several bills amounting to >$2,000 for non-emergency medical expenses (annual visit, bloodwork, radiology) on 12/02/2021. I was shocked because I was told that everything was covered and in-network. (I wouldn’t have gone otherwise.)
After visiting my insurance portal and seeing that all the claims were denied, I called member services and was informed I missed my payment for December 2021. The grace period was three days. That is, I had until 12/03/2021 to pay my premium and keep my coverage. To my knowledge, I was never informed at any point that I had missed my payment or that I was in danger of losing coverage.
I filed a grievance with the insurance company, but I probably won’t get a response for weeks, and I am worried that I don’t have a strong case. If I really have to pay >$2,000 out of pocket, what can I do? Call the clinics/labs involved and try to negotiate? What can I ask for? Deadline extensions, payment plans?
