I thought my copay for a visit would be $70 but they billed over $2,000 and I’m responsible for over $600. Is there anything at all I can do?

I have United Healthcare Choice Plus through my employer. We are supposed to have a $70 copay for an in network specialist visit and I have visited and been charged this copay many times without issue.

However, recently I visited a new (also in-network) specialist and instead of the usual, I received a bill for over $600. United was charged over $2,000. It broke down as follows:

Clinic visit: $309

Labs: $1671 (TSH $584, HC Collection of Venous Blood $63, B12 $489, CMP $535)

“Professional Services”: $544

This is absolutely ridiculous. First off, it was a 1-hour visit less than half of which was with the actual doctor. The time with the doctor consisted of a 5-minute neurological exam and the doctor repeatedly telling me “I cannot comment on your case and I have never heard of these disorders.” Nothing more.

And I have gotten these tests done before and NEVER seen a $534 charge for TSH or $60 charged for poking a vein.

Is there anything at all I can do in this situation? I am seriously upset because I got nothing at all out of the appointment and would never have gone OR consented to the unnecessary labs (all of which I’d had before) if I had any clue it would end up costing me over $600.

It’s listed as billed as “Hospital Services” but I was not an inpatient, just visiting a doctor at a hospital center as I’ve done before dozens of times without issue.

Thank you for any advice.
