What if the government covered individual healthcare above $10,000/year? They could force insurance to cover up to that amount with a $5000 family or $2500 individual deductible. This would take the larger burden of catastrophic coverage off of insurance companies, but they wouldn’t lose money from those who would go to the doc for just a sniffle. People could keep their insurance that they like but not lose their house if they get cancer. Families wouldn’t lose everything to save their sick child.
