I am a Canadian citizen who is awaiting a spousal green card via adjustment of status (i.e., I get to wait in the USA vs. waiting outside the country) and I probably won’t have my green card for upwards of 12 months. In the interim, I do NOT have a SSN, nor do I have employment authorization of my own. However, I am lawfully present in the United States and USCIS is aware of my legal intent to immigrate.
My spouse’s HR director said that we could try to just enter a placeholder SSN in order to add me as a dependant on his coverage, but this sounds like insurance fraud?!?!
Can I be added as a dependant? If not, what the heck do I do for health insurance for the next 12-18 months?
Edit: Sorry, AutoMod reminded me to include my age and zip. I’m 24 and zip code is 60606.
