Insurance is refusing to pay for (nearly all) birthing costs for a dependent on their parents’ insurance plan after previously paying for several doctor visits and ultrasounds.

I’m making this post for my girlfriend since she’s not very familiar with Reddit. Here’s the story; My girlfriend had a baby in August. She was 24 at the time and is still covered under her parents’ insurance as a dependent of the policy holder. The insurance company paid a coinsurance for (at least) the first 3 doctor visits and ultrasounds which led my girlfriend to believe they’d pay for the rest of her visits. She was also under the impression that she’d be covered for most of the birthing costs. They’re saying that isn’t the case. They’re saying that since she’s a dependent she doesn’t get the same coverage as a policy holder or spouse. They’re saying that the coinsurance payments were a mistake and that they’re currently disputing them. I don’t personally know the right course of action, but I feel like she/we shouldn’t be obligated to pay the lump sum of the baby bills (including all doctor visits after the initial visits that they paid towards). We knew we’d have to pay for portions of these bills, but I feel they set a precedent by covering those initial visits. She also had a conversation with an agent back in October that said the pregnancy should be covered and they’d send that off to be fixed. My girlfriend had little, to no, correspondence with the insurance company after that, until today when she found out they had sent her bills to collections.

Does anybody here have any kind of advice? Are we screwed here? One of the hospitals does offer financial support and we’re waiting to hear back from them on that, but this is still a very frustrating situation and we still have another hospital to deal with.
