Background: the procedure was our son’s home birth back in June (highly recommend, wonderful experience). We paid for the procedure out of pocket. Our insurer was Blue Choice. Due to covid, Blue Choice approved a “gap extension”, meaning the otherwise costly procedure would basically be billed as if it were in-network. Sweet right? Sort of. Reimbursement and billing has been a nightmare.
Blue Choice spent months reimbursing us piece meal. A check here, a check there. This was in between several incorrect EOBs we received, and some other wrong information regarding how much we should have been reimbursed. I fought tooth and nail for what I thought they roughly owed us (although who knows…the whole process is so damn opaque!). Finally we received roughly what an in-network birth would have cost.
Fast forward to yesterday. I get a letter in the mail stating that I was overpaid nearly $2500 and have 30 days to pay it back! Honestly I’m not sure they DID overpay me because the whole process had been so messy. Can I demand a detailed explanation or even fight this? Can I ask for a reduction of the bill? I definitely can’t pay this in 30 days, if at all. My wife’s work contract ends next month and we’ll have our household income halved for the foreseeable future. The timing on this is awful :/ Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you good people of Reddit!
Note: I haven’t called the insurance company to discuss yet. I want to be armed with information and have a few options in mind.
