Hi all – My grandma (80F) has been on dialysis for kidney failure for about 2 years now. Overall, she is doing well apart from pretty major anemia problems. She was initially taking iron supplements which did not improve her iron levels. The doctors then moved on to try a Venofer infusion. However, she had a terrible allergic reaction that put her in the hospital for about a week. Since then, she’s had two doses of Injectafer, which have significantly reduced her symptoms and helped her live her life again.
Following those two doses, the hospital stopped providing the infusions as her insurance (Medicare and United Healthcare) would not cover Injectafer. Since that time, she’s gotten by with blood transfusions, however, these don’t last nearly as long or help her symptoms nearly as much as the Injectafer. She has gone back and forth with insurance seemingly countless times to no avail. Her kidney doctor has been very supportive, providing phone calls with insurance and letters. Insurance continues to give her the run-around.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get this covered? I would love to help her as this insurance situation is really taking its toll.
