Is an ex-employer able to keep me in their health insurance if I’m no longer an employee (if they wanted to)

The short version:

I work for my father’s company now, but may switch jobs. Is it possible for me to remain in their insurance plan after I’m no longer an employee? (I mention its my father’s company as that’s the reason they may be willing to potentially do that, if its possible). Also: I’m 27 years old.

The longer version:

I’m thinking about getting a new job, but unfortunately, health insurance is a major part of my decision making, more than it would be for most. For the last few years I’ve been taking a medication that has done wonders for my health. But, I’m not the typical recipient of this type of medicine. Research came out a few years ago that this medicine could help illness X, even though it was meant to treat illness Y. My doctor was willing to prescribe it to me, and it took a long time for my insurance to be willing to cover it – almost a year of fighting for it. Finally I was able to take it, and its shown great results. My company switched insurers once, and the new insurer didn’t approve this medicine at first either (since its meant for an illness I don’t have). Finally after a couple stressful months the new insurer agreed. But now, I’m very nervous about changing to another company (and thus a new insurer) in case the new insurer is not willing to cover my medication. (the medication is way too expensive to even fathom paying out of pocket).

I’m wondering if it’s possible to change companies but remain on the old company’s insurance, without receiving a wage from them. Does anyone know?
