I’ve been unemployed for almost a full year. In Texas, I don’t qualify for Medicaid because I’m young and don’t have disabilities. If I put in $0 income, it shows that my monthly premium will be over $200/month for the worst healthcare plan. I really only need health insurance for if something like an accident happens and I end up in the hospital. I never go to the doctor, I only get sick maybe once every couple of years, I don’t have prescriptions or anything like that. The only outlier is Covid, but I’m pretty careful about being around lots of people and it is pretty unlikely (I think) that I would end up needing to be hospitalized, should I catch it. Honestly what it comes down to is with no income I can barely afford to pay my rent and groceries, let alone a couple hundred bucks every month in case of emergency.
Is there anything I can do? Or should I just go without insurance? My goal is to get a job that provides some sort of healthcare but I’ve been unemployed for so long I’m worried that it might be a while before I find that. My mom also told me that I can get charged for not having health insurance, is that true? I’ve gone without health insurance before, how would the government even know? If that is really a thing, how on earth would someone with no money be able to afford healthcare or be able to afford getting hit financially for not having healthcare? Just doesn’t make any sense.
