Hello! I live in KS and have an employer provided, ACA compliant plan.
I received a Dr recommended blood test that was sent for pre-auth and approved by insurance. Dr. said that the lab would not charge me more than $250 cash price. They sent through insurance and I was not offered the chance to pay cash. Didn’t think twice about this at the time of my appt – lesson learned.
Insurance refused to pay, I appealed, and then they ultimately paid $181 for the test.
I received a bill for my entire deductible shortly after, directly from the lab. Lab said they are “obligated to collect this amount.”
Sales rep for lab said that if I sent it through insurance I cannot get off the hook, but that they won’t send me to collections and to try and negotiate at the 3rd notice because that is when they are most willing to deal.
I intend to wait the bill out at this point as they have been unwilling to negotiate down to the cash price.
Is there any further recourse I should be exploring? Like a benefits rep through my work?
I appreciate you taking the time to leave guidance – thank you.
