Looking for COBRA process clarity

OK, I (Midwest, Male, 45) know there’s a lot of posts on here about COBRA, but I just want to verify I understand this right. I’m looking to switch jobs (one will end March 12, next will start March 15) and I’m not eligible for insurance coverage for the new job until 30 days after the 1st of the month so I’ll be uninsured for April. New job has offered to cover COBRA for April, but I want to make sure I understand the process – please correct me if I have any of this wrong. As I understand it:

– I will receive COBRA info from my existing plan administrator within 14 days of my last day of coverage (March 31)

– I sign the document opting for coverage but only hold on to that (in case I cannot sign it).

– If there is a need for the coverage, I (or someone) sends the form back to the plan administrator for the previous job and they use the previous employer insurance card at the time of service.

– Within 45 days of electing coverage, I will need to pay for the COBRA coverage for the month of April.

– I will need to then cancel the coverage on May 1 when my new employer’s insurance kicks in.

Does this sound right or am I missing something?
