Late 2020, I contacted a Marketplace recommended tax agent for marketplace insurance for my husband and myself. We were told we qualified for a premium discount due to my husbands income (~33) and our Native American enrollment. In April 2021 he lost his job and did not find employment until June 1 (making 80k). I then cancelled that insurance on June 17.
Now that we are filing taxes, we are being told we never should have qualified for a reduced premium and now having to pay back 2k to the feds.
How is that correct? Tax preparer is telling us “it’s just the way it is”. It makes no sense to me.
