Marketplace plan not canceled after taking new job’s insurance, owe months of unused premiums

At the start of the year I was unemployed and signed up for a Marketplace plan with a premium tax credit. The provider for this plan is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBS).

I make the payments on time up until May when I got hired at a new job and enrolled in their healthcare plan. I then stopped making payments to the prior Marketplace plan as I figured it’ll just be canceled automatically due to non-payment. Big mistake.

Now it’s September 11th and I get an e-mail from BCBS saying I’m about to be canceled due to three months of non-payment.

I then immediately called them and explained the situation, but they said there’s nothing they can do and I still owe them four months of ‘missed’ premium payments. I then called Healthcare.gov and they said they can only cancel on the day I called, which is today, so now my termination date is September 11th instead of in May as I hoped.

Amount owed for the missed premiums: $800 to BCBS + $1200 in tax credits that I probably no longer qualify for. Total: $2000 (brutal)

What are my options?
