I currently live in CT and will be on my university’s healthcare plan until 7/31. Coverage cannot be extended and COBRA is not available. I start a new job in RI on August 16th, but my benefits don’t kick in until September 1st. I move to RI on August 7th.
I’m looking at ACA plans to fill the one month gap. If I purchase a CT plan that takes effect on August 1st and move to RI a week later, will I run into any problems with having an out-of-state plan in RI for the three weeks before my employer insurance kicks in? My initial thought was that I would have to transfer/reapply for RI insurance upon moving on 8/7 (moving would be a qualifying event that would make me immediately eligible), but it seems like the plan wouldn’t take effect until the 1st of the next month (9/1) anyway, when I would be covered by my employer’s insurance. Or should I (can I?) purchase a RI plan for the month instead, even though I won’t be a resident until after coverage becomes effective?
I know that it’d probably be easier to just go without coverage for a month, but I’d rather not risk it. Sorry if this question is super obvious; just want to make sure I’m getting it right!
