I recently got my boyfriend on my Cigna Open Access Plus health insurance that I get through work; he was added as a domestic partner. I wanted him to have access to an FSA for his deductible so I told my employer to withhold $100 from my paychecks (over the course of like, 6 pay checks I think?) to fund his FSA…
…except I fucked up and added that money into the dependent CARE FSA, which can only be used on daycare expenses. I contacted my employer and asked for them to move the money into a dependent FSA (per Cigna’s suggestion) and they said that since open enrollment ended, they cannot move the money. Not only that, they also can’t refund me the $100, and if I don’t use it by end of this period, the money will go back to the employer and the employer will keep it.
This doesn’t seem right to me – shouldn’t that money:
A. Be able to be moved into the correct account B. Be able to be used at any time in the future if I choose to keep it for when I have kids (no kids right now) C. If that money is not used at all and can’t be kept after the year is over, shouldn’t it be returned to me?
I called Cigna to see if they can move the money on their end, but they haven’t done so – I’m going to call tomorrow and confirm it’s because my employer is the one who has to do it.
Basically – how can I secure this money so that it actually gets used by me?
Additional info: when I told my employer about this error, they were able to stop payment into the DCFSA (I had only paid in $60 so far), but not able to move the funds.
Thank you in advance!
