Hi, i appreciate the forum and would welcome any thoughts. I will lose my performers union insurance at the end of the month, which has been super-affordable, quality Anthem BCBS low deductible coverage for a number of years. I am 64 in April, and in great health with no major issues… exercise and am not overweight, non-smoker. So with COBRA I would go from roughly 1400 a year in premiums, to nearly 1000 a month on COBRA. With some relaxed income restrictions I qualify for about a 400-500/monthly subsidy on an ACA plan. I’m approaching a sort of window of about a year before i would qualify for Medicare insurance. So, with this ACA subsidy, i could get a plan for less than 500/month in the meantime.. high deductible plans at the low end of the ‘marketplace’ spectrum, but i dont have a bunch of specialists and high volume of doc visits… in fact, my PCP would allow me to pay a flat 25 per office visit (but he is a ‘concierge’ doc- with “MDVIP” and i pay 1800/year). The cheaper ACA plans (less than 500/month with subsidy) are all HMOs and my coverage has been Anthem PPO – which has been great. There are also a few HMO+HSA options. So all this explained, what is the fundamental downside of HMO vs PPO in this situation… and, is an HSA worth bothering with if i do not anticipate really high medical expenses? I guess bottom line is, what’s the worst case scenario with an HMO vs PPO . I mean, with either format, I would still have “major medical” coverage, right? Thanks for any suggestions on which way to turn here. Much appreciated!
