I live in WA but my parents were in PA and now my mother is considering moving in with me.
FYI, my father didn’t have enough Social Security credits so I imagine my mother won’t be eligible for the “Survivor Benefits” program (correct me if I’m wrong). My mother will be 65 on December. She doesn’t have enough Social Security credits (only 14 credits) so I believe she won’t be eligible for free Medicare (correct me if I’m wrong). She will live with me and my husband and most likely won’t be working for a while. She doesn’t have much assets other than about $7,000 in her Roth IRA that she contributed a few months ago.
I’ve done some research on the Medicaid program here in WA (Apple Health) but I still have few questions regarding eligibility. So here are my questions:
Since my mother won’t be working for a while, I would assume she won’t have to file taxes, correct? If so, if my mother lives with me and I don’t claim her as dependent when I file my taxes, will she be eligible for Apple Health? I’m asking this question because I’m confused about what the program will consider as household composition.
Will her Roth IRA considered as “Assets”? I believe when I did my research, they will only accept people that have $2,000 or less in assets so if that’s the case, I would imagine my mother won’t be eligible for Apple Health (correct me if I’m wrong).
We’ve also considered paying the Medicare premium but not sure how much that would cost. She’s in pretty good health for a 65 years old. If anyone has experience with this or have any other suggestions, any advice is welcome. Thank you in advance!
