I’m a single and mostly healthy 31 year old, and I’m planning to quit my job next week. I cannot stay at my current job until I find a few one for reasons which I won’t go into detail here, but basically my work environment is so toxic that my mental and physical health is deteriorating due to it. I need to quit for my own sanity.
I have around 7 months of savings which I plan to live on until I find my next job, but it’s the health insurance stuff than confuses the hell out of me. I’ve never quit a job before without another one lined up and never had to look for health insurance on my own. I understand if I quit, I don’t qualify for any unemployment benefits including health insurance/COBRA. But can I still apply for unemployment health insurance anyway?
I’m wondering what are my options and where to even start. Where do I look to buy my own health insurance (until I find a job again)? Do I qualify for Medicaid? Do I also buy that separately from vision and dental? Around how much a month should I be looking to pay for someone my age and with no serious health issues? I don’t really see the doctor much and want to keep costs low so I’m really just looking to buy a plan that only covers serious stuff/ catastrophic events. I’m in Texas by the way.
