Don’t be afraid to negotiate or play hardball with the billing provider!
UHC had a terrible contractual rate ($0 discount) for an ear tube removal procedure at my local hospital. They did not inform me of this until after billing leaving me with a $3000 liability due to my high deductible. If I had been self pay my liability would have only been $1700, due to the 50% discount on the $3400 total charges a self pay patient receives.
After much discussion hardball negotiations I got the Hospital to accept $1700 payment to resolve the matter.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate and use resources available such as the BBB and any local public officials that may have a larger voice!
