My family (myself, husband, 1 toddler) are currently covered under an HMO from my husband’s employer with about $400/month payroll contribution. I just started a new job which has a PPO plan we are considering. It seems very affordable: $600/year payroll contribution for the family + $1800 yearly surcharge for spouse with his own healthcare option + $3300 total family deductible. There are two things to note:
1- I am going to have a baby and give birth in a hospital in May. Under our current HMO, I paid almost nothing for my first labor and delivery. Would it make sense to switch to my new employer’s PPO and pay down what’s left of the deductible for my labor and delivery in May? I assume that medical care will exceed what’s left of the deductible.
2- My husband has an expensive monthly prescription. The $3300 deductible on the new PPO is combined for medical care + prescriptions and after the deductible is met, the employee pays for prescriptions at 20%. I’m not sure how much we are currently paying out of pocket for his prescription with the HMO.
Any thoughts? Am I missing key details? Thanks!!!
