My husband and I have always had employer based health care. He was laid off from his job 12/31/20 and his next employment situation is not settled yet. He has been going to school part time and there would be value in him being able to devote more time to it and get through more quickly. If healthcare weren’t such a huge cost, we could swing that for a while financially. So employment at this point is mainly motivated by securing health care. If we could figure out what paying for a plan ourselves would be, it would help our decision making process for what jobs would work for our situation. We have never had experience with the healthcare marketplace. We’ve also always had good insurance, and with two kids getting good coverage is important, but I’m afraid how much it will cost. Can anyone point me to a good primer for how to navigate this? Will we get good options thru the marketplace? Are there other paths we should consider? Is there any way to have good affordable health care outside of an employer provided plan? We’re in Michigan, in case it matters. Edit: per the prompting, I’m 37, my husband is 38, my kids are 4 and 2. Our zip code is 48103. Our income is currently zero, though we have enough savings to live for a year or two in reasonable shape.
