Newborn Coverage Mess up

So, I messed up with properly getting my daughter added to my workplace health insurance plan and am in quite a confusing situation that I’m looking for advice on. My daughter was born late October 2021, around the time annual enrollment for 2022 at my workplace was happening. In the excitement of her birth, when I logged in to add her to my insurance, I hastily made the changes through the annual enrollment option, not the qualified life event option and logged off. I recently received about $7500 in medical bills for her that weren’t billed to insurance, called around and here I am now with the realization of what I’ve done.

To make matters more confusing, I left my job in the middle of December to pursue a different job. The coverage from my old insurance plan will expire end of December, but I am starting my new job Jan 3, and am aware of Cobra policy should anything arise through this weekend of lapse of coverage. I am working with my old employers benefits dept to see if anything can retroactively be done but I don’t have a good feeling about this.

Is there anyway I can classify this mistake of mine as loss of coverage or something to gain open market insurance to help? Or do I have any other options besides paying the full amount?
