I was on my parents insurance from their work until March of this year when I turned 26. I have been on Medicaid since.
Since March, I’ve had a dozen or so doctor appointments and picked up medication multiple times, all billed to and paid by Medicaid with no issue.
August was my most recent appointment, with another scheduled for 11/17. My doctor was sick and had to reschedule, but as were rescheduling her receptionist told me that my insurance was denying their claim for the August appointment.
I called the customer service and they saw that the insurance from my parents job had me covered and it had started in March. I told them all the above, they said they’d reach out to the old insurance company and see what’s going on.
I checked my member portal and I found one page that shows me as being covered by the old insurance with a coverage effective date of 3/1/20, but another page just for other insurances that says ‘As of today, you do not have any other health insurance coverage’.
Why would Medicaid cover all those appointments and prescriptions if I’ve supposedly been on the private insurance?
We looked at my parents insurance portal, and it shows them and my little brother, so their system says I’m not covered. Should I try and reach out to that insurance myself and see what’s going on?
My rescheduled appointment is for 11/23. If we’re still figuring this out then and this one also gets denied, will I have to pay out of pocket or will Medicaid go back, see I had coverage and retroactively pay for it? Or should I cancel/reschedule again for further out?
I’ll be getting a new prescription at the appointment, which I’m sure I’ll have to pay for at the pharmacy if this isn’t straightened out by then. It’s not a life saving medication, so I’m not worried about going without for a little while. But I’d rather not pay out of pocket if I don’t have to.
