A friend of mine lives with her parents in NY state and makes almost no income (maybe ~$400 a year between various gigs). She is currently in college part-time (the school doesn’t offer an insurance plan.) She will be turning 26 very soon. She has a number of chronic health and mental health issues, so she need a good health insurance plan without high deductibles and good mental health coverage.
She wants to know if she qualifies for New York Medicaid since she lives with her family. She is not claimed as a dependent on her parents’ tax return for the year, but her address is the same as her parents plus her parents support her completely. She never filed a tax return before.
She also wants to know how Medicaid in NY compares to the ACA plans there. Does Medicaid tend to be better or worse than them?
If it’s unlikely that she can get medicaid, do you have any advice for getting a good plan on the ACA marketplace? I took a look and they all look like crap–in-network and high deductibles… I don’t think this is something she can do given her recurring health issues, frequent tests, and specialist visits.
I’m sure she’ll appreciate your help when I relay the info to her. Thank you <3
