PA – IUD (contraception) was covered by insurance but I was still charged a copay for the insertion appointment because the doctor is billing these as “office visits” instead of “IUD insertion”. Is this allowed?

Hello!

It was my understanding that the affordable care act covers contraception with no cost sharing (no copay or deductible), and my doctor confirmed that my healthcare plan would cover my IUD. Great!

I had my new IUD placed yesterday and was surprised when they charged me a copay, which happens to be $140. And that I would get charged another $140 when I go in for a follow-up string check in one month.

WHAT?!

So I called my health insurance company and they said that the doctor billed my visit yesterday as an “office visit” instead of an “IUD insertion”, the latter would have been covered completely under the ACA. But since their office charged it as an office visit that’s why I’m stuck paying this ridiculous copay.

So I called the doctor and asked why they billed it as an office visit and they wouldn’t give me a straight answer, said that their billing employee was out until next week (convenient), and that they’ve never heard about the IUD insertion being covered by the ACA. Only preventative care/annual exam.

Does anyone know anything about this stuff? Is there anything I can do at this point? I really can’t afford to be out another $300 right now 🙁

THANK YOU!
