Partner began apprenticeship with a small business that does not provide healthcare. Adding him to my plan through my job costs us $800/mo. Partner is in 30s and good health. What are our options?

Hi Reddit!

My partner and I have been paying $800/mo for the past few years to add him to my health insurance. He currently works full time doing a job learning a trade and there are no healthcare options available to him. He’s in good health and really resents having 1/3 of my pay going to our insurance plan. Are there any options for tradesman based insurance plans or plans for apprentices? Our tax info for the marketplace is based on a job he used to have that paid a lot more, so now we are making less money but the filing that a tax credit would be applied too is deceptively higher. Upon first glance, it’s the traditional $300-400/mo premium with the $7600 deductible I remember from getting a plan in college. He’s considering just going uninsured, but I worry since we do some outdoor physical activities together and I wouldn’t want to see him break a leg or something and we’d fall into massive medical debt.

Any advice?
