I voluntarily left my job on 12/11/2020 and have signed an offer letter for a new position that will start on 01/11/2021. My current coverage will end 12/31/2020 and my new coverage will start 01/31/2021.
I am trying to understand what my options are regarding health insurance. The clear options are:
- decline COBRA and do not apply for Marketplace – go without coverage for 30 days
- Pay out of pocket for COBRA
- Pay out of pocket for Marketplace
My questions are:
- If I pay for COBRA will it automatically be cancelled when my work provided coverage starts?
- If somebody in my family had a catastrophic medical need during our gap of coverage could COBRA coverage be retroactively started?
- If somebody in my family had a catastrophic medical need during our gap of coverage could I apply for Marketplace coverage retroactively?
I would like to skip COBRA and Marketplace for the 30 days but I am not a risk taker and will sleep better having a month of coverage if retroactive coverage is not an option.
