So my wife recently changed job and she’s currently working as a contractor, so no employer’s health insurance. She and I have been having employer’s plans and get used to PPO. Since she’s working as contractor and my employer doesn’t subsidize family (it’s expensive without employer’s subsidize), I signed her up for a marketplace plan. The problem I have is there’s no PPO plan in Texas on the marketplace and the insurers there don’t have as big of a network as we’re used to. Most of the PPO plans I found in Texas are short term (3 years and maximum coverage like $1 million). We’re considering to sign her up for a short term plan but we haven’t had a short term plan before so we’re not sure if it’s the right choice. My question is is the $1 million maximum coverage just for the 3-year and when she sign up for another 3 year term, the maximum coverage will be reset to another $1 million? Can she sign up for another 3 year term when the current term ends? If she changed job and the new employer offered health coverage, can she cancel the short term insurance or does she have to pay the remaining premium of the 3 year term?
