Hi All!
I’m finally entering the workforce and with that comes navigating benefits. I’m trying to decide between a PPO and an HSP. If I ignore medications, the HSP makes way more sense–the deductible is $900 more than the PPO, but the premium is $960 more for the PPO, and all other clinics/hospital values are about equal. So theoretically, the money I would have spent paying the fixed premium I could either save or spend on health costs and still save $60. The max out of pockets is also comparable (within $300 of each other).
BUT I think I need to pay 20% of my medications under the HSP whereas the PPO is a $20 copay (if I understood the benefits package correctly). ADHD medications are expensive–I use GoodRx right now and I pay $50-60 a month for them, and this is with the medication that’s the cheaper option than what my psychiatrist wanted.
For context, I (will) have Horizon BCBS, and right now I’m on generic Concerta/methylphenidate
Here are the highlights of the two plans:
PPO:
Total yearly premium: $2,574 | Deductible: $600 | Preventative care covered | Out of Pocket Max: $3,200 |$25 copayment to primary care for illness | $10.00 Copayment generic medications |20% Coinsurance other drugs (preferred drug: min $25, max $50, non-preferred: $50/$100, specialty N/A) | 20% coinsurance for pretty much everything else
HSP:
Total yearly premium: $1,612 | Deductible: $1,500 | Preventative care covered |Out of Pocket max: $3,500 | Co-insurance of 20% for pretty much everything, including drugs
