Pre-authorization rant (MRI)

I just have to get this off my chest. The question is more rhetorical and I don’t expect any replies.

I have chronic hip pain and went to an orthopedist (in mid May). X-Ray showed some ligament issues, but orthopedist wanted an MRI so they referred me an appointment at local hospital for MRI (Hip Arthrogram).

Insurance (Anthem PPO) took 1.5 weeks to do pre-authorization. Authorization had 2 week expiration. Hospital for whatever reason took another 4 days to contact me to setup an appointment. They had no availability for appointments within my 2 week authorization window. Yay. Contacted orthopedist again, they requested another pre-authorization.. Takes another 1.5 weeks for insurance to pre-authorize. Hospital contacts me 1 day later but only availability is the day right before my 2 week summer vacation, and 2nd authorization expires while I’m on vacation. My original intent was to get this done weeks before my vacation. No way in hell I’m getting a hip anthrogram, which can have complications from as little as a few day of soreness to full on septic arthritis infection, the day before my vacation where I won’t have reliable access to medical treatment if I need it.

So, I have to contact my orthopedist again after I come back from my vacation, and get a 3rd authorization.. putting the MRI probably late July and a full fucking two months between my first orthopedist appointment and just getting a damn MRI, so I can schedule a follow-up orthopedist appointment (probably in August) to look over my MRI results.

Fuck my life and this hip pain. Thanks insurance company and your shitty 2 week expiry windows that don’t take into account real life schedules or hospital appointment availability.
