pre-existing conditions help

Hello folx,

I am a Fulbright scholar currently on my grant term overseas. In February I had a pretty nasty fall that resulted in nerve damage and herniated discs on my spine. I am incredibly lucky to still be walking and to be able to complete the terms of my grant.

I am on travelers insurance from bcbs, and will likely be uninsured until August 1. I return to the US in July, and I have a really amazing job waiting for me (I accepted a great offer yesterday!).

I wanted to know how continued care is going to work out for me. My doctors here have approached my injury with conservative care and have avoided surgery, but in my last couple checkups they have seemed less optimistic….or maybe uncertain. My symptoms arent getting worse, but I’ve been dealing with new ones that have come on gradually, or symptoms that come and go. I fear I may need an operation, and I’m kind of out of time and money to get it done here and fully recover before my visa expires and I fly home.

So I guess I need to know — Once my plan kicks in in August, can insurance assist with an operation in this particular scenario? Would I need to pay out of pocket for any new treatments or a surgery? What are the variables at hand, and what should I be prepared for re: assistance/non-assistance? Are these questions not specific enough or even the right questions to ask?

Any insight you all can provide would be most welcome. Big thanks in advance.
