My wife and I (anesthesiologist) had to find a new primary care MD after our beloved internist retired. We had seen him for about 15 years. We chose different physicians this time. Each of us saw our respective doctors about a month ago. Interestingly, we were both billed for non-preventive services although the nature of the visit was indeed preventive care. We both have pre-existing conditions which were used as the diagnosis codes although the conditions were not the primary focus or reason for the visits – nor did they require intervention as we each see specialists for these conditions. As our insurance covers an annual preventive care visit, we would have not had an out-of-pocket cost if the visits were coded as preventive. Because the visits were coded with non-preventive diagnosis codes, we have both been billed as our deductible has not yet been met. Our insurance company doesn’t seem particularly interested in helping us – my assumption is that this practice saves them money while the primary care doctors are reimbursed more than for a preventive visit. Just looking for opinions/advice. TIA
