I recently left a corporate company with good benefits and I’m now self employed. I have a wife and 3 year old son that were on my policy. Now I’m shopping around the marketplace and most (decent) plans I see are at the very least $1,500/month.
I called and spoke with someone who suggested / was selling me on signing up for Multiplan PPO. The rate is sub $600 a month for the whole family. I’m told with PPO I have a wide network of doctors / medical professionals I could use if needed, that I wouldn’t be limited in that regard. I also understand Multiplan PPO does not include pregnancy / birth, substance abuse, or mental health – which we don’t need any of those. There is also no deductible, but it’s not very clear about what my cost would end up being / where the floor or ceiling is if I were to (knock on wood) break my arm and need to go to the emergency room, for example. With the monthly cost being so low, and no real deductible, it seems like there’s a “gotcha” here that I’m missing. Is this a reliable health plan for my family? Anybody have any experience with this? FWIW, we are an upper middle class family and CAN afford the 1,800/month policies if need be, but of course I wouldn’t mind saving a lot of money if this health plan is legit. Thanks for any input!
