Question About Not Having Insurance

Background: I recently quit my job, but am still covered under the plan I got through the company through the end of the month. I can’t afford COBRA after that because it would be about $800/month and I won’t have any income while job hunting. The options on the marketplace are also looking a little too expensive for my liking, since the premiums for the highest deductible plans start at more than a single visit to my PCP without insurance. So I was planning to go without insurance for a couple months while I look for a new job. I am not too concerned about having a medical emergency during that time.

The question that comes up is: can a future provider refuse to cover my claims just because I had a lapse in coverage? My mom keeps insisting this is the case and is trying to push me to sign up for a plan on the marketplace as a result. I was under the impression that the ACA made it so that ACA compliant plans cannot do this. Which is correct? Would I need to sign up for a marketplace plan to avoid the situation my mom is concerned about?
