I’m a full-time hourly based employee and recently came eligible to opt in for Health insurance for the upcoming year. I’m 24 and have been healthy enough to be getting by, though I’ve been struggling with acid reflux and would like to get some medical attention soon. Over the past years I’ve been getting by without any help and just dealing with the issues but it’s getting progressively worse.
They’re offering all their full-time employees up to $700/mo towards any of the Health Insurance plans that they’re offering with Anthem, ranging from Bronze – Platinum.
Where my question lies is on the site to sign up, the system is calculating my cost per pay period of $0.00 for each plan. Doesn’t matter if it’s the Bronze or Platinum, it’s always $0.00 per pay period.
My gut instinct is telling me to go with a Platinum plan in this case. I’m definitely not super knowledgeable about Health Insurance plans, so please correct me if I have this information wrong. From how I understand pros/cons of the different plans, Bronze is the cheapest monthly premium but higher out of pocket costs when attention is needed, while Platinum has a higher monthly premium but lower out of pocket costs for medical attention. Silver and Gold are somewhere in between.
In a case like this where the monthly premiums are essentially waived to $0.00, wouldn’t it make sense to just go with a Platinum account (#7 below) that works best for me? Is there something that I’m not quite understanding here?
The Anthem plans listed below for reference:
1: Bronze PPO Deductible $6000 / 45% Co-Insurance / $7050 Max OOP
2: Silver PPO Deductible $2200 / 40% Co-Insurance / $8600 Max OOP
3: Silver PPO Deductible $2600 / 35% Co-Insurance / $7050 Max OOP
4: Gold PPO Deductible $1500 / 30% Co-Insurance / $8300 Max OOP
5: Gold HMO Deductible $700 / 20% Co-Insurance / $8450 Max OOP
6: Platinum PPO Deductible $250 / 10% Co-Insurance / $4200 Max OOP
7: Platinum PPO Deductible $0 / 10% Co-Insurance / $4200 Max OOP
Please enlighten me if there’s something I’m not understanding here as I have about a week to make a decision.
