Hi folks,
I was laid off from my job on January 4. I was covered by my (former) employer’s healthcare plan for January, and then for February and March my former employer paid my COBRA premium.
April 1 is coming up fast, and I need to know what to do. It sounds like that through the new bill passed by congress, I should be eligible to receive COBRA healthcare insurance through September. Earlier this month (before the bill passed) I had set myself up to receive personal healthcare insurance through DC. The COBRA administrator, when I contacted them today, said that they are still ‘getting things set up’ and don’t have any info to share yet!
As I type this, I’m realizing I don’t even know how to phrase my question. I guess it’s basically… ‘what do I do’? The unclear messaging re: next steps from the COBRA administrator has me nervous. Do I just cancel the DC coverage and not pay the COBRA premium for April 1? Do I cancel the COBRA coverage and just start on my own healthcare? I would like to take advantage of the COBRA coverage if possible and want to ensure I won’t have any gaps in coverage.
Happy to clarify anything… thanks in advance for your thoughts!
