Hello! My wife and I currently have health insurance under her employer. We are about to have a child, so she wanted to look into adding my employers health insurance as a secondary insurance to help cover some costs.
My goal is to see if the added cost of the second insurance would be worth the price of upcoming hospital bills for the childbirth. If it would be worth doing that or just keeping her health insurance with her job and leaving it with that.
Currently, her deductible is $2,800. After that they cover inpatient hospital services 20% up to an out of pocket max of $4,000.
The insurance I have available has a deductible of $5,000, after that they would cover 20% up to an out of pocket max of $6,500.
I called the hospital and they estimated a 4-5 day stay with childbirth etc would be close to $3,430. This is without insurance kicking in yet, a gross amount.
So I did some math and (correct me if I’m wrong) but I did
$3,430 (the estimated total hospital bill) Minus $2,800 (her deductible) Equals $630.
Then if I’m right, the 20% kicks in and we would only owe either $126 or $504, depending on whether THEY pay the 20% or WE pay the 20%.
And then my next question was, this would be where MY insurance would kick in? If so, would we have to pay everything up to the $5,000 deductible before we saw any savings? If that’s true, it doesn’t seem worth the effort or monthly expenses to have the secondary insurance. But please correct me and right me if I’m wrong and help me understand!!
Thanks so much.
