Age: 29. Zip code 98271. Income: Currently $0. Previously $100k.
I recently quit my corporate job to take several months off to ski and study for some certifications through the remainder of winter/spring and trying to determine what my best options are for health insurance while I remain unemployed. My last day of health coverage through my employer was Jan 29th.
COBRA coverage will run me $550/month and looking for something cheaper, mainly to cover me in case of a hospitalization or major ski injury.
A few questions:
Medicare (Apple Health in WA)
- Would I quality for medicare based on the fact that my current income is zero? My income from last year and the month of January were well above the threshold to qualify.
- Can I project my annual income as just what I was paid in January even if I’m planning on seeking employment again in late Spring? I would obviously discontinue medicare at that time and switch over to the new employer’s health plan.
- Are there any potential repercussions to obtaining medicare then having an annual income at the end of the year above the medicare qualifying income level?
- Would medicare cover medical emergency costs outside of Washington state (will be spending a bulk of the time over the next few months out of state.)
ACA Plans
- If I don’t qualify for medicare, is my best option to find an ACA “catastrophe” type plan on WA’s public healthcare marketplace?
- Similar to the earlier question, do these plans cover emergency medical expenses incurred outside of WA?
Thanks for any help/guidance you can provide. If there’s any other information I need to provide to assist with answering these questions, let me know.
