school billed me for full-time student insurance. I was never a full-time student during the semester and I already have insurance

*I really appreciate anyone who is able to respond to this post. We have been pretty decimated by the economic impact of the lockdowns, so any advice will make a huge difference!

I go to school in Boston and they have a policy that full-time students must have either their school insurance or waive the insurance requirement and provide proof of valid insurance outside of the school.

I have full insurance coverage through my spouse’s job. Our insurance is now charging us 3k for the routine lab draw on the first pregnancy appointment because they say I am covered by another insurance.

On 12/29, the school apparently enrolled me into their health plan. The semester started on 01/19. The deadline to waive their school insurance was 01/29. I was registered incorrectly for two classes, which is full time, in the school course system, which I caught and unenrolled from on 01/06, before the semester started. So I was never a full-time student at any point in the semester.

On 2/11, I noticed an email from the Gallagher health system that I had been enrolled in their health plan, sent on 12/29 (which is when I assume I was enrolled) and that states:

Our records indicate that you have been billed for the *School* Student Health Plan (NUSHP). Commonwealth of Massachusetts Law requires that all full-time students are enrolled in a health insurance plan. *School* charges all full-time Spring students for NUSHP for the semester, which is a high quality, affordable health plan administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts. If you have health coverage that is fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act and that meets Massachusetts State requirements, you may waive NUSHP.

I read that email on 2/11. Since I was at no point a full time student in the semester, and since I have never had to waiver during the semesters that I am only taking one class and thus part-time, I had no idea why I had received that email. I responded immediately when I saw it, asking for clarification and stating that it was a mistake, received an automatic reply from the system that they would respond in 2-3 business days, and then did not receive an email from them in response ever.

Fast forward to now. I have never used the health insurance (since I didn’t know that I had it) and I just dropped my class on 4/07 so I am no longer enrolled as a student at the school. I checked my bill once our insurance cited a second insurance coverage and I have a $1,357.00 charge on my billing statement.

What can I do? Do I have any options to counter this school insurance bill? The coverage goes through August, and since I am now no longer a student there, this bill would be $1,357.00 for 2.5 months of health insurance. We don’t have that money, we don’t even have enough money for me to stay in school right now, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
