Short term health insurance while employer insurance kicks in? (California, H1-B work visa)

Hi guys, so I’m a foreign worker on a work visa (h1-b) and my employer has provided me with health insurance. However, the effective date starts on November 1st (I started working October 1st).

I just had a scare (everything’s ok) but I’m very concerned that if something happens to me before November 1st I will be in debt for the rest of my life due to ER and ambulance cost.

Is there a way I can cover this gap until November 1st? I heard about Cobra but from what I understand this is AFTER i lose my job (if i lose it).

Thank you
