For my cardiologist appointment, I currently have health insurance through my school (via UCSHIP, which is Anthem BlueCross), and used that insurance for this appointment. However, I wasn’t told I needed to get a referral to go to this outside cardiologist office, and was given the go-ahead that my insurance was accepted by this office for my appointment (which was just a check up on my heart, standard EKG etc.). And so I did the appointment without getting a referral, and just now 2 months later received a massive bill in the mail with no deductions at all claiming “authentication from student health center was not obtained.”
Now, the bill totals ~$1200 and I have no idea what to say to the billing agency and how to get this resolved. I can easily and immediately get a referral to see an outside cardiologist (should I do this now? I’m not sure if the referral can be applied retrospectively). I didn’t get a referral initially because when scheduling the appointment they told me my insurance was accepted. I can’t believe they would tell me my insurance would be accepted, and failed to tell me I needed a referral when scheduling this. (I obviously wouldn’t have had this appointment otherwise).
I’ve never been in a situation like this before, and would greatly appreciate any help/guidance. Thank you.
