Suprise Medical Bill

Hello! I’m sorry if this is the wrong place to post but I’m seeking advice.

I’m a 29 yr old graduate student on the NY state employee plan (NYSHIP – empire plan). I’m in Brooklyn NY, 11226. I cannot pay the bill, which is $590.

I saw a doctor whose website and Zocdoc profile listed my insurance. I called before making an appointment to confirm this and they said they were participating with my insurance and plan, so long as I saw the correct doctor within a practice that accepted my insurance (because some doctors within the practice took NYSHIP Empire Plan and others did not). I saw the doctor I was told to see. Well – it turns out that not only were they not contracted at all with my insurance, but also sent a skin specimen to a non-participating lab without my consent. Given it was a skin sample that could be malignant, she said it had to go for testing, but she never gave me a choice of lab or told me it would be sent to an out-of-network lab.

It looks like this fits for protection under the surprise medical bill law. My question would be what are the next steps? The bill has gone to a collections agency and we’ve contacted them to give notice that we are disputing it.
