Obligatory “on mobile sorry for formatting.” Also apologies if this is confusing as I’m confused myself.
Currently I have state health insurance that covers everything because I was low income and self employed. At the end of 2020 I got a new job and didnt think to cancel this insurance (there was a lot going on). Now a bunch of stuff has come up that has me freaked out because of this oversight.
My job started going over benefits for the new year which made me realize I forgot about the state insurance. I’m still low income but not low income enough to qualify since my employer offers insurance. Heres the problem: I currently have surgery scheduled in about 3 weeks which would go under the state plan. However I technically dont qualify for this insurance anymore and was supposed to notify them of my job change last year.
My question(s): 1) Is it better to cancel this government insurance immediately? Is there a strong likelihood if I dont theyll come after me to pay for the surgery? 2) My job already knows about the surgery. If I try to get health insurance through them now, will they try not to cover it? I know I’ll have to push the surgery back- and probably even get a new surgeon- but seeing as they know I need it, will they try to say that was preexisting?
All of this was a stupid, honest to god fuck up that suddenly hit me today. Because the government assistance is so good I havent had to think about bills and such until a big operation came up. I’m scared if I keep the date theyll come after me later for tens of thousands of dollars. But a part of me really doesnt want to lose my awesome surgeon and the dates all booked. If I cancelled shortly after a surgery would they still probably come after me? I’m so torn and worried. Thank you for any insight.
