Switched Job (and dental insurance) Mid Dental Procedure & Now New Insurance Won’t Cover–Am I Screwed? (NY State)

Long story short, I had private dental insurance with Empire and started an implant/crown treatment under their coverage. I recently switched jobs and signed up for Guardian dental insurance through them, so I cancelled my Empire insurance. Prior to the switch, I had the implant completed but I still need the crown. Guardian is now refusing to cover the crown because it is a pre-existing condition. Are they correct? Is someone not allowed to switch jobs mid-treatment? Some medical treatments can last years, so it seems unfair that the employers/insurance companies can hold you hostage like that. Thanks!
