I recently injured my meniscus on a small backpacking trip. It wasn’t severe enough to hinder me, but my knee definitely feels weaker than my right (strong) knee.
I’ve had an issue since I was in high school (~10 years ago) where my knee would buckle, followed by moderate pain, then back to almost normal 5 minutes later. This would happen maybe every 1-2 years. But 3-4 years ago, I went running and the same thing happened but more severe and couldn’t walk with weight on my left (bad) knee for a day and a half. The NP recommended no surgery just PT.
Fast forward to today, I went backpacking, similar issue, my knee buckled but wasn’t as severe, but my knee definitely feels weaker and more prone to injury. I’m ready to do whatever i can to get it repaired, surgery or not. I want to tell my new doctor (and new insurance) my history with it, but i’m worried they won’t cover it if i tell them I previously had this issue for years, saw an NP, didn’t get surgery, etc.
Should I just forgo my previous history and mention this was my first time injuring it? I want my new doctor to know the medical history, but I also don’t want to risk paying out of pocket for any surgery if it happens to be determined as a “pre-existing” injury.
Thank you!
