This is the first time in our marriage that it made sense to be on the same health care plan. Previously we both had our own blue cross through our employers.
We both have high deductible plans and had our first baby at the end of the year…
We had decided to all go on my husbands plan once she was born but I wanted to be covered under mine until year end because I had met my deductible.
Two months after delivery, surprise, we got a $4k bill addressed to our newborn daughter. We were unaware that we had this bill coming and it was too late for me to add her under my existing plan through year end because the bill came well after my 30 day window to add her… I asked for an itemized statement Bc I had no idea what they even charged us for… $4k (two nights) for her to stay in the bassinet in a room that we were already billed for….
Here is my question: all three of us were added retroactively on her birthdate. The pediatrician services at the hospital were billed under this (about $500 – and we have paid). However, the hospital did not have my husbands plan so it was never billed to BCBS. We did not see this $4k coming and obviously is very stressful to come up with when you were not expecting it.
I called the hospital panicked and since they billed to mine and she was not covered they offered a 45% discount for an ‘uninsured rate’ which is much more doable.
Here is my question: BCBS picked her up technically on her birthdate through my husband. We would rather pay the “uninsured discount” obviously… being at year end and having a high deductible plan. Is this insurance fraud? Can I ask BCBS to add her to insurance effective 1/1/22 instead of her birthday?
Had we would have known this was coming we obviously would have opted for my husbands low deductible plan… too late now.
Sorry long winded… any advice appreciated.
