Hi all! Hope you’re having a great Monday. Here’s the situation (in VA):
I am covered by Medicaid with my mom. We have had this insurance since 2018/2019 or so, but between then and now she got and left a job that offered United. That was our primary until she left in 2020. By the time she left, I was seeing a therapist that I would no longer be able to see if not under United. I received a stipend from my school to purchase one of their student United health care plans that only lasted for the summer term. Before I enrolled in that plan though, my father offered to cover me with his insurance, KP, through his job. There was some funny stuff going on with HR and the actual coverage didn’t kick in until an entire year later, in April of 2021. Presently, I am covered by both Medicaid and KP.
Third, I just graduated and am about to start my first full-time job (yay!). I am about to enroll in benefits as well. The health care plan my employer offers is better than KP in that the range of specialists I can see is much bigger and any prescriptions are covered. Not exactly sure how it stacks up to my Medicaid plan, though.
As far as I know, there’s nothing necessarily wrong with being covered by three plans. The only roadblock I have encountered is being hit with $400+ in bills, BUT only because, in Dec 2020/Jan 2021, my Medicaid plan thought United health care was my primary insurance when in reality I was no longer covered by United. This was sorted out and the bills are not my responsibility, but it was still a bit of a hassle. Also, being covered by three plans seems excessive and messy. I have NEVER used KP and will probably opt out of that one and actually have Medicaid as my secondary this time.
I’m just not sure if there are any pitfalls I am not aware of, or maybe I shouldn’t even bother opting out of KP, just in case.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Have a great day.
