I have a bunch of questions regarding the travel health insurance for a visit to US by a non-US citizen.
My mother is gonna fly to Chicago, IL soon after long wait. She’s 66 years old, has already her private health insurance which does NOT cover her outside of her home country. We’ve already purchased a travel health insurance by Allianz based in her home country. That policy is modest, yet includes ER expenses up €50,000.
Now, we’re exploring the option to buy something more extensive for US coverage. We laid out several plans from AIG, IM Global and TII Global. After much research and policy reading, we found out that actually the ratings people gave for these insurance companies and their policies are crap. For instance, we checked IM Global on Trustpilot, and found out somebody’s review mentioning that the company did not accept claim for a heart attack based on the premise that the insured has a high cholesterol. A fricking heart attack!

Also, I’ve bumped into similar comments and reviews on other web sites regarding other companies being shady and finding a way out to decline claims. Even crazier, one company did not pay someone’s ER cost of $280 for dehydration. $280! I don’t think they would ever pay something more than $1000 let alone a surgery.
Here are my questions,
1-) This whole travel health insurance business looks like a big old scam. Is there any company out there that is more trustable and more likely to cover for medical expenses than grabbing the premium (which are quite expensive BTW!) and leaving us high and dry?
2-) She’s non-US at a considerable old age. Is there another way to cover her medical expenses with a health insurance during her visit in US?
3-) Is there a way to get her insured just like any other US citizen (from BCBS, or other local companies) ?
Thanks so much for the answers!
